In a world where racism and homophobia are intersectional , i had to develop a thick skin.
When i was a child, teenager and young adult, i had NO support group, I had NO social media , I had NO counselor who was aware of the unique challenges Black gay men, like me, deal with.
As i heard the rhetoric from so called Black leaders equate my sexual orientation as a down fall for our community, i also experienced racism from the police, school and even at gay clubs. I learned early that many, but not all, White LGBT folks can be as racist as their heterosexual counterparts.
At the end of the day DNA donāt lie . I am who I am, fuck what others may think or feel.
Throughout my career as a social worker , working with many heterosexual young Black men, i held my own. Years later, many seek me out to thank me for being a social worker that helped them understand themselves and being in healthy relationships with their girlfriend or wife, utilizing tools and skills they leaned from me. Many of them see me as a father figure, fully aware that Iām gay and HIV poz. In fact one straight Black man i counseld when he was a teenager, now in his 30s and working on his third degree, was one of my groomsmen. He calls me pops and has never felt gay or āconfusedā due to me mentoring him.
There are many Black gay/ same gender loving/ bisexual / queer men of African descent struggling or reusing to entertain racism and homophobia from our communities.
As i continue to work with Black and Brown young people of all sexual orientations, they see and understand that i have no gay agenda , nor a desire to do nothing more but offer them counseling and words of encouragement.
But for many, like me, they feel scared to be authentically themselves out of fear of being judged. Iām in the thought that everyone cannot and should not be open , but when and if you do become āopenā- whatever that means to you, you are still worthy of respect.
The only thing I didnāt like about the episode is that they say that Jaida Essence Hall āOf the b*tch for the b*tchāĀ is the first drag president,Ā when we know that she is the third drag president
Because Bob The Drag QueenĀ āThe gay agenda, designed by lesbian,Ā so you know itāll workā is the second drag president
And Sharon NeedlesĀ āsharing responsibilitiesā is ourĀ first drag president
